Designing a Beautiful Home With The Future In Mind |
|

Hi Friends, As we enter March, I find myself feeling more hopeful as I anticipate spring and warmer weather. I love those first signs of the season changing like the longer daylight, patches of grass reappearing, and the promise of color emerging from the bulbs. It feels like a fresh start. This season of renewal has also made me reflect on something that has become an increasing focus in my design work: sustainability. You might be surprised by how deeply sustainability is woven into interior design, from sourcing and manufacturing to transportation and the life cycle of the products we bring into our homes.

Here are a few thoughtful ways you can make a positive impact:
- Buy quality pieces designed to last.
We live in a very disposable culture. According to the EPA, over 9 million tons of furniture ends up in landfills each year. Investing in well-made pieces that stand the test of time is one of the most sustainable choices we can make. - Consider where products are manufactured.
Items produced overseas often involve longer transportation routes, which increase environmental impact. Quality standards and labor practices can also vary widely throughout the world. - Reuse and repurpose when possible.
If you’re replacing an item, consider donating the original piece. Schools, art programs, or upholstery classes may welcome furniture for hands-on learning or creative projects. - Choose natural fibers when appropriate.
Natural materials often have a lower environmental impact than petroleum-based synthetics. That said, some synthetic fabrics are made from recycled materials. Selecting with sustainability in mind, is rarely black and white. - Be mindful of VOCs.
Low or no VOC paints, adhesives and finishes help reduce off-gassing and support healthier indoor air quality. - Look for third-party certifications.
Certifications such as Greenguard, FSC, WELL, LEED, and Cradle to Cradle provide helpful guidance. Keep in mind that smaller manufacturers may follow sustainable practices without having the resources for formal certification.
Sustainability isn’t always simple and no product is perfect. I aim to thoughtfully balance beauty, longevity and environmental responsibility in every project.
