When Is It Time to Hire a Designer?

Hi Friends, Here we are in April. It seems an early spring will be keeping us waiting a bit longer this year! I’ve been savoring the beautiful days we’ve had and, like many of you, I am looking forward to the full arrival of the season with its blooming bulbs, fresh air and a renewed sense of home. Recently I was asked a thought provoking question: “How do I know when it’s time to hire a designer and what should I look for?” The simplest answer to this is when do you seek out any professional? We trust mechanics with our cars, medical professionals with our health, and other specialists with the things that matter most. Why? Because they bring experience, training, and perspective that help us avoid costly mistakes and achieve better results. The same is true in design. Most people remodel or redesign a home only once or twice in their lifetime. A design professional does it many times each year. We know what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to guide you toward decisions that reflect your lifestyle, your goals and your investment. And perhaps most importantly we help you navigate what you don’t yet know. As the saying goes, “You don’t know what you don’t know…until it’s too late.” Design is about so much more than selecting colors and furnishings. It’s about creating a home that functions beautifully, feels comfortable, and reflects who you are today.

If you’re considering hiring a designer, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Education & Credentials
Do they have formal training in interior design? - Professional Affiliations
Memberships in organizations such as ASID, IIDA, or NKBA demonstrate a commitment to ongoing education and industry standards. - Portfolio & Website
A professional website allows you to see their work, understand their process, and read client testimonials. - References
Speaking with past clients can give you valuable insight into what it’s like to work with them. - Design Style
Don’t worry too much about whether their portfolio matches your exact style. A well-trained designer can work across a range of aesthetics to create something uniquely suited to you. - Process & Pricing
Ask how they work. Do they have a project minimum? Are fees hourly or project-based? What level of involvement can you expect? - Personal Connection
This may be the most important factor of all. You’ll be spending time together making meaningful decisions. It is important to work with someone you trust and enjoy. It will make all the difference.
Hiring a designer isn’t just about creating a beautiful space, it’s about creating a home that supports your life with ease, comfort and confidence.
