Hi Friends,

You have probably had a chance to stroll through your neighborhood and see the exteriors of homes which appeal to you. Have you determined which features you like and why? You may remember last month we were discussing how to help your home make a great first impression. We discussed everything from how to add a pop of color to your front door to paying attention to the size of your shutters. I waited to discuss lighting because lighting is so crucial it needs its own focus. I hope you find these tips helpful when you are considering the lighting for your home’s exterior.

• Make certain the style of the exterior lights is similar to the style of your home. If you have a contemporary home use contemporary fixtures. If you have a traditional home select a fixture which is also traditional in style. Nothing looks as mismatched as having a contemporary home with a very traditional fixture.

• Pay attention to the size and proportion of the lights. Consider where the fixture will be placed and select the size of the fixture accordingly. So often I will see too small a fixture by the front door. The scale is completely out of proportion. When the scale is off the appearance of the front of your home will seem out of balance. It can be helpful to make a template of the size of the fixture you are considering so you can better visualize it in proportion to the other outside features of your home.

• Placement of the fixtures is critical. Make certain the fixtures are evenly placed on each side of the door and or garage. Are they at the correct height? If you don’t have a new build you can select a fixture that will hide the faults of a misplaced electrical box. For example, a fixture which has a large vertical back plate can disguise a misplaced electrical box.

• Illuminate the pathway to your front door. There are some great landscape lights and many are solar powered. Lighting the walkway to your front door not only makes a visitor feel welcome, it can also be a safety element.

• If you have a special landscape feature why not use a light to accent it? Trees can be majestic. If you have a special one in your yard, you can use a light to make it more magical.
