Planning Today for a Better Remodel Tomorrow |

Hi Friends, August already! I hope you’re finding time to enjoy these beautiful summer days. I want to continue the discussion on project planning, construction and how to avoid certain problems but first, I want to give you an update on the A Great Day Farm Project. As I mentioned in a past newsletter, our Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers Design for Good Committee has partnered with Joy Collaborative, Nor-Son Construction and Larson Building to reimagine the building used by A Great Day Farm for their indoor recreational activities. Construction started mid-July. We have the framing complete and are working to finish the electrical and HVAC so we can start on the drywall. We are trying to have the facility open by September 26th. Trades people and vendors have graciously donated time and products to make our vision come to life. We still have a few more hurdles to overcome but we are on our way. Now, back to the newsletter tips…Once you have decided to move forward on a remodel or update, here are five ideas to make your remodel go more smoothly:
- Finalize the Design Before Construction Begins
Complete your floor plan and selections before work starts. This minimizes change orders, keeps the project moving efficiently and allows your contractor to prepare a more accurate bid. - Order Materials Early
Cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lighting and tile can have long lead times. Ordering early reduces delays and helps ensure your favorite selections are still available. This also helps your contractor build a more accurate construction schedule. - Plan for the Future
Even if you don’t need accessibility features today, consider adding blocking for future grab bars or wiring for a heated toilet seat or bidet while the walls are open. - Communicate Regularly
Establish how you’ll receive updates. Weekly meetings with your contractor, designer, and architect (when applicable) can prevent misunderstandings before they become costly. - Set Aside a Contingency Fund
Unexpected discoveries behind walls are common in remodeling. Having a contingency fund reduces stress and gives you flexibility if surprises arise and if it isn’t needed, it will allow you to add those special finishing touches.
