Home: A Place to Exhale

Hi Friends,

As we enter February, I find myself counting the days until spring and warmer weather. Honestly, anything above zero feels hopeful right now.  I can only imagine how good it will feel when the thermometer finally reaches 40.

Between the cold winter days and everything happening in the Minneapolis area, I’ve found it harder to focus than usual. It’s natural to feel unsettled, distracted, or even weary with everything that is happening. When the world feels heavy, we instinctively look for places that make us feel safe and, for most of us, that place is home.

Our homes aren’t just where we live. They’re where we process, rest, gather and heal. They hold our routines, our conversations and our quiet moments. In times like these the way our homes support us becomes especially important.

Thoughtful design isn’t about perfection or trends, it’s about creating spaces that help us breathe a little easier. We want and need rooms that feel balanced, lighting that feels gentle, furniture arranged to encourage connection and corners that invite stillness.

Here are a few simple, practical ways to create a more comfortable and grounding atmosphere at home:

  • Create conversation areas.
Do you have spaces that encourage people to gather and connect? Furniture pushed against walls can actually make conversation feel distant. Try floating seating closer together toward the center of the room to create a more inviting and intimate layout.
  • Anchor your seating with a properly sized rug.
A rug that’s too small can make a room feel unsettled. The right size brings balance, warmth and cohesion and helps define a space where you can truly relax.
  • Use neutrals with texture.
Layering soft, textured neutrals creates a calm, relaxing environment while still adding interest. Color can be introduced through accents, making it easy to refresh your space as your mood or the seasons change.
  • Layer lighting and use dimmers.
Lighting has a powerful impact on how we feel. Multiple light sources and dimmers provide flexibility throughout the day, while softer lighting helps us unwind and feel at ease.
  • Create cozy corners.
Designate a spot for reading, resting, or simply being still. Placing a comfy chair near a window, with good lighting, a small table and a cozy throw can turn an overlooked corner into a favorite retreat.

Design has the power to ground us.  Small changes can make a meaningful difference.  If you’d like help creating a space that supports you during this season, I’m here to help you with the process.
