Hello Friends!
Do you remember the image of Snoopy doing the “Happy Dance” by his dog house? Well, that is me at High Point Market. I’m like a kid going to Disneyland! (Remind me to tell you a story from back in my flying days.)
In case you aren’t familiar with High Point Market, it occurs twice a year (fall and spring) in High Point North Carolina for designers and vendors throughout the world. There are showrooms and pop-ups that display the latest and greatest in fabrics, furniture, lighting, rugs and home décor. There are also classes and seminars held every day during the six days of Market. I was there four days and averaged 15,000 steps a day. I also was able to attend five seminars. It is great to get insights on what is going on with the latest in design.
Let me share some of my take-a-ways:
- Organic shapes are encompassing all parts of design from the shapes of furniture and the patterns on fabrics and rugs to lighting and accessories, including mirrors.
- Although the coastal vibe is still being shown it is more refined than in the past. The current trend is using warmer neutrals with muted jewel tones which create an atmosphere of comfort and coziness.
- Lighting is incorporating wood into the design of its fixtures, often in organic and biophiolic* shapes. This reflects the warmth and coziness similar to the new color palette. It is quite different from the traditional straight lines and metal finishes. Check out Accord Lighting and Furniture. “Bubble” (my term, not industry standard) lights are also trending. These are primarily pendants and chandeliers which have round glass covering the bulb. When the glass is clear vs. opaque glass, they resemble the bubbles we used to blow with the wand. (See the above photo from the Regina Andrew showroom.)
- Cordless lighting continues to improve in both style and function. No longer do they look like the battery powered lamp you would take on camping trips. Visual Comfort has some beautiful cordless table lamps.
Frankly, I could go on and on. These are just a few of my insights. If you want to see more photos, check out my Instagram account at @terry.gustafson.design or click the link here – https://www.instagram.com/terry.gustafson.design
