Hello Friends!

Hurray hurray…oh wait, I guess I missed that deadline. Since last month I have been thinking more
about project planning and would like to add a few more helpful hints. Whether you are doing a
cosmetic update to your home, remodeling a kitchen, or building a new home, planning in advance can
be the key to making the project run smoothly. Even if you are thinking this is something you would like
to do in a few years it is not too soon to start. As I mentioned last month, the home building and
remodeling industry is crazy busy right now. The majority of contractors and builders are booked a year
out. I talked to a cabinet maker recently who is not taking on any new projects until 2022. It’s never
too early to start gathering information

• Start planning a budget for the project. When the professionals ask you what your budget is, it is helpful to have a number or range in mind. They are there to help you and guide you so you can stay within that budget figure and advise if it is a realistic number. Most of the building supply prices have skyrocketed in the past 6 months. What was feasible last year may not be this year.
• If you plan to do a remodel or construction, make sure you set aside money for the furniture and finishes (such as window treatments). It can be very disappointing to have a great new space and not have enough money allotted so you can really enjoy the room(s) of your dreams.
• If you plan to do a rebuild or new construction start measuring your furniture and take photos of the items that you know you want in your new space. It is easy to add a couple of inches to a wall now when in the planning stages. It is much more difficult to do it after the walls are up. It can be heartbreaking to be moving into the new space only to discover that the item you love the most will not fit into the space.
• Be careful about changing courses. Remember that game stacking the wood blocks? As this tower is created players remove blocks from the lower layers hoping the tower will remain standing. Design is similar in that if you start changing the lower “base” layers, it can affect everything else that is going on in the design, resulting in a cascade of changes or a room that no longer has the desired look.
• Just because you “love the look” of something it may not be appropriate in your new space. I love those cute short flowing dresses but I won’t purchase one for myself these days. The same holds true for home design and decorating. It is easy to get drawn in with all the bright shiny objects but make sure everything will create a cohesive design.
