Hi Friends,

Happy March!  As you may remember last month’s topic was about the importance of partnering with people with whom you have a good relationship when embarking on a home project.  Remodeling can go on for months if not years depending on the scope.

It is essential that you gather a team with whom you feel comfortable, trust and can communicate freely so you are able to discuss all the aspects of your home update.  In addition, these people must have a good relationship with each other. Good communication and respect are key elements in assuring the project runs smoothly.

There can be mishaps if the contractor doesn’t involve the designer or the designer doesn’t listen to the knowledge of the contractor or the homeowner forgets to communicate a change to one of the parties involved. Coordinating the details of the design between the homeowner, the contractor/subs and the architect is one of the most rewarding aspects of my design business.

In last month’s newsletter, I relayed an example of great teamwork which was paramount in successfully completing this primary bathroom update within the time parameters. Let me give you a specific example of that teamwork and communication.

Shower design

The shower design involved large tiles, 12 x 24, placed vertically soldier style for the shower surround.  If you are not familiar with soldier style, the tile is stacked on top of each other so the grout lines are inline. Careful planning is not only essential but critical. Determining exact locations of the placement of the tile can be challenging when you consider the shower size, the size and number of niches, especially ones with decorative tile, and the location of the plumbing and hardware.

In this design, not only did we have a niche, but we had additional areas of decorative tile. The tile setter and contractor were amazing.  They both understood my vision and were determined to make it a reality even though it would be more difficult to create.  The contractor, tile setter and I spent one morning at the job site, carefully planning the layout to make sure the niche was in the correct location, allowing the grout lines to align accordingly, and that the tile would be centered correctly so the edges would be in the best possible locations. Planning the placement of the tile from top to bottom and side to side is critical in any installation.  We all had respect for each other and what we each brought to the project.  The end result looked amazing.

Embarking on a home update or remodeling venture is a very personal exciting experience.  After all, we are there to fulfill our client’s dream.  If everyone has good communication skills, is respectful and has a willingness to work together for the best outcome, the process will run more smoothly.  I would love to be able to help you with your next update.  I am supported by a great team. Together we will help your vision come to life.  Give me a call and let’s start planning.

Stay tuned next month when I recap the Kitchen and Bath Show 2025…
